Harry Redknapp seems to be making a fuss about the Wayne Bridge, deal. He has said that
if he is not backed in the transfer window he aint sticking around the relegated club.
Redknapp took over as in November as boss. He could
not prevent the club’s slide however, he wants former England
international Wayne Bridge in his team – but he is still some way from being able to complete that deal.
It is believed that QPR are keen to offload some of their expensive array of players before they start sanctioning further transfers – the club have spent lavishly in each of the last few transfer windows, and have a bloated squad.
Redknapp was forthright in front of TV cameras yesterday, saying of the club’s transfer policy: “If we don’t change it, and I don’t get the players that I want to bring in, then we have not got a chance.
“You can’t have other people having a say at all, I’m a football person and I’ve got a staff around me of football people.
“We’ve got to make the decisions, and if we make the right ones we will have a chance. Otherwise, if other people want to make decisions we’ve got no chance.
“If I don’t get that, then I wouldn’t stick around.
“I’ll speak to Tony Fernandes. They’ve got to back me with the people I want.
“I’m not asking him to spend money, I’m looking at a couple of free transfers.
“I’m trying to get Wayne Bridge, I thought he did fantastically well with Brighton, he’d be a good left-back for us.
“He’s got great experience, looks in great shape and is a player I want to bring in on a free. I’m hoping that’s the first deal I can do.
“Tony is away, but I’ll speak to him and see if we can get the deal done.”
After yesterday’s bumper edition of transfer rumours, it’s a quieter day across the back pages, with the lead football stories mainly divided between Redknapp and Roberto Martinez promising Everton Champions League football during his four-year stay at the club.
But that said there are still some interesting pieces of tittle-tattle doing the rounds.
Juventus are turning their attention to the signing of Carlos Tevez of Manchester City, say the Daily Mail.
The Serie A champions’ preferred target is Stevan Jovetic, but Fiorentina are desperate not to sell to a direct rival, and the Montenegrin is attracting interest from Chelsea and Arsenal.
The article also suggests that Juventus have all but done a deal for Gonzalo Higuain, who is also a target at the Emirates.
Aston Villa have named their price for Christian Benteke, claims the Daily Mirror – and that price is £40m. That would be some return on a player they spent £8m on just one summer ago, but whether that is a price tag ‘to scare off interest’ from Tottenham, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid, or simply to drive the transfer fee up, remains to be seen.
They also report another Chelsea target (we could have sworn blind that Jose Mourinho said he wasn’t going to go on a spending spree) – the £35m-rated Hulk. The Blues have gone close to a deal for the Brazil striker before, they are keen on a striker after missing out on Radamel Falcao, and apparently Hulk’s current club Zenit St Petersburg are prepared to sell.
The Daily Mail suggest that Andy Carroll’s permanent move to West Ham United is being held up by wage demands. A fee around £15m was greed with Liverpool some time ago, but now the club have offered a six-year, £100,000-a-week deal for the striker – and expect an answer this week.
And despite releasing Denilson, Sebastian Squillaci and Andrei Arshavin on free transfers yesterday, the decision has given Arsenal a £10m transfer boost. The Telegraph explains that those free players accounted for that amount annually in wages at the Emirates.
